Assessment
A. General of Selection Process.
To participate in the Family Medicine program, applicants first should complet a written exam to assess their basic medical knowledge.
Interviews will be held at the Ministry of Health, in collaboration with the university.
The candidates will be tested for their knowledge of English, the potential to think as a general practitioner, their knowledge about primary care and their basic attitude to participate as a student.
The assessment of the candidates will be done first on an individual basis and in a second step in
consultation with the Jordanian partner.
A rating of 1-5 points is given and the students who were insufficiently proficient in English and students who appeared to be insufficiently competent to reason and act as general practitioners were not retained.
Language:
One main selection criterion is proficiency of the English Language which should be assessed throughout the interview. This strategy did not seem to be most effective since the participants are hardly proficient enough to follow classes and not able to take part.
A formal English assessment is applied as test and to follow the acknowledged levels of language proficiency to take part in an English program.
- Future Possible applied Criteria;
Another selection criterion was the potential to think and act as a general practitioner. The participants indeed are very interested in the particular learning and working context of family medicine but their daily practice is far removed from general practice. This makes it difficult for the students to empathize with the specific context of general practice and to make the link between theory and practice. In the next phase, the teachers should gain more insight into the daily reality in the workplace of the participants in order to better respond to the needs.
The knowledge about primary care was assessed during the interview.
students possess extensive medical knowledge but do not know how to translate that
knowledge into the general practice context. In the next phase, we must better prepare
them for this context with reading and audiovisual material.
