Dr. Shorouq Abu-Khamees from the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences at The Hashemite University has received an international research grant from the Synchrotron-light for Experimental Science and Applications in the Middle East (SESAME) to support a research project aimed at developing innovative technologies for the transdermal delivery of drugs and active cosmetic ingredients.

The project is being conducted in collaboration with Professor Suja Hamed, Dean of the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences. It aims to chemically map drug-loaded nanoparticles within microneedles fabricated using three-dimensional printing technology, employing infrared spectroscopic analysis at the synchrotron radiation beamline.

This achievement aligns with The Hashemite University’s strategic efforts to strengthen research collaboration with local and international institutions by encouraging faculty members to develop high-quality research projects and submit them to funding bodies. It also reflects the University’s commitment to keeping researchers informed about global funding opportunities and advanced research programs.

The research project aims to contribute to the development of new, more effective, and safer drug delivery methods, offering promising alternatives to painful conventional injections or oral tablets, which may be less efficient in certain cases. Microneedle technology may provide a convenient and rapid approach for delivering treatment directly through the skin.

SESAME, hosted by Jordan under the umbrella of the Jordan Atomic Energy Commission, is the first synchrotron light source in the Middle East. It is an international scientific organization established by member states in the region under the auspices of UNESCO. The center serves as a key platform for building scientific research capacity and expertise across various disciplines, while also providing an international research facility open to scientists from around the world and contributing to scientific, technological, and economic development in the region.
