As part of its scientific seminar series, the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences hosted a lecture by Dr. Fouad Daras, an expert in intellectual property, titled:
"The Role of Pharmaceutical Patents in the Drug Industry."

Dr. Daras highlighted the importance of patents in promoting innovation and encouraging scientific research within the pharmaceutical sector. He emphasized the crucial role of legislation in protecting inventions and supporting sustainable development in the pharmaceutical industry.

He noted that the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan is among the leading countries in the region in protecting intellectual property rights in the pharmaceutical field, praising the efforts of the Jordan Food and Drug Administration (JFDA) in ensuring the safety and quality of medicines and food products.

Dr. Daras also discussed the main types of exclusivities that help safeguard pharmaceutical innovations:

• Patent Protection: Grants the inventor exclusive rights to manufacture and market the drug during the patent period.

• Data Exclusivity: Protects clinical trial data submitted to regulatory authorities.

• Market Exclusivity: In certain cases, grants the innovator exclusive marketing rights even after the patent expires, based on local laws.
