Participants in an awareness seminar organized by the Hashemite University, in cooperation with the King Hussein Cancer Center, highlighted the dangers of “juice” substances in electronic cigarettes and the harmful chemicals and toxins they contain, which have a direct negative impact on the human body. The seminar was organized by the Faculties of Medicine and Pharmaceutical Sciences at the university.
Professor Dr. Khaled Abu Al-Teen, Vice President for Scientific Faculties, emphasized the importance of collaboration between health and academic institutions to raise health awareness, launch educational campaigns, and provide a healthy, smoke-free environment. He also noted the Hashemite University’s serious efforts to reduce smoking and transform into a smoke-free campus.
The seminar featured presentations by Ms. Rawan Shehab, Head of Health Media at the King Hussein Cancer Center, and Ms. Mona Mahmoud, a health awareness specialist. The event was moderated by Dr. Tahani Al-Widyan from the Faculty of Pharmacy. The speakers addressed the alarming increase in smoking rates in Jordan, which ranks first in the region and third globally, particularly in the prevalence of electronic cigarettes. They discussed the health effects of e-cigarettes, the misleading promotions that influence individuals to start or continue smoking, and emphasized effective methods for quitting smoking, such as seeking professional behavioral and medical support. They also called for the strict enforcement of anti-smoking laws in public and private institutions to mitigate its negative effects.
Professor Dr. Saja Hamed, Dean of the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences, urged students to be positive influencers in their communities, contributing to anti-smoking awareness campaigns. She emphasized that students should take an active role in combating all forms of smoking, especially its newer forms, as smoking remains a significant health hazard.
Assistant Deans of the Faculty of Medicine, Dr. Ayman Al-Shar’ and Dr. Doaa Qutaish, provided insights into the anatomical harms caused by smoking of all kinds, focusing on its damaging effects on the blood and various organs of the body.
