This course addresses the theoretical and practical principles of orthotic and splint design, fabrication, and application within occupational therapy practice, with particular emphasis on the upper extremity and hand. It covers relevant anatomical and biomechanical principles, properties of splinting materials and tools, and procedures for measurement, design, fabrication, fitting, and modification. The course examines static and dynamic splints and their applications in protecting tissues and joints, maintaining functional positioning, preventing or correcting deformities, and supporting movement and function. Emphasis is placed on selecting appropriate splints according to client needs and occupational goals, monitoring skin integrity, fit, and potential complications, and educating clients and caregivers regarding safe use and care. Practical laboratory experiences develop skills in splint design, fabrication, and evaluation while relating orthotic management to occupational performance, independence, and participation in daily activities. |
