This course extends the study of neuroscience from a functional and applied perspective, emphasizing the integration of neural systems underlying movement, sensation, cognition, and behavior. Topics include motor control, coordination and balance, sensory integration, pain, and higher cortical functions such as attention, memory, learning, language, and perception, as well as principles of neuroplasticity, motor learning, and neurological recovery. The course also introduces the neurological and pathophysiological foundations of common central and peripheral nervous system disorders and relates neural dysfunction to motor, sensory, cognitive, and behavioral impairments and their consequences for activity, participation, and occupational performance. It provides a scientific foundation for subsequent coursework in neurological assessment, rehabilitation, and occupational therapy. |
