This course addresses occupational therapy assessment and rehabilitation of individuals with hand and upper-extremity injuries and conditions and their impact on occupational performance, independence, and participation. It covers common injuries involving bones, joints, tendons, ligaments, nerves, and soft tissues, together with tissue healing and related precautions. Topics include assessment of pain, edema, range of motion, strength, sensation, dexterity, and functional hand use; restoration of movement, strength, sensation, coordination, and manual skills; edema and scar management; tissue and joint protection; sensory and functional retraining; activity modification; adaptive equipment; and orthotic use when indicated. Emphasis is placed on restoring functional hand use and return to daily activities, work, and life roles. |
