This course introduces the fundamental principles of kinesiology and biomechanics and their application to understanding and analyzing human movement and occupational performance. It covers planes and axes of movement, joint kinematics and mechanics, muscle properties and actions, and principles of force, torque, levers, center of gravity, balance, and motion. The course addresses functional movement analysis of the spine and upper and lower extremities, with particular emphasis on the upper extremity and hand, posture, balance, reaching, grasping, and object manipulation. Anatomical and biomechanical principles are integrated with the analysis of everyday activities and tasks and with understanding the impact of movement and musculoskeletal limitations on performance, independence, and participation. The course develops students’ ability to analyze movement demands during functional activities and provides a scientific foundation for assessment and intervention in subsequent occupational therapy coursework. |
