This course addresses the principles and practice of occupational therapy with children and adolescents with developmental delays and disabilities, emphasizing the impact of motor, sensory, perceptual, cognitive, behavioral, and psychosocial factors on occupational performance and participation. It examines common developmental conditions and their effects on activities of daily living, play, learning, education, and family and social participation. The course covers occupational performance assessment and analysis, identification of child and family needs, child- and family-centered goal setting, and planning and implementation of occupation-, activity-, play-, and evidence-informed interventions. Intervention strategies include development of performance skills, activity grading and modification, environmental adaptations, assistive technology, and support for participation at home, school, and in the community. Emphasis is placed on clinical reasoning, outcome measurement, family-centered practice, promotion of independence and participation across developmental stages, and collaboration with families and interdisciplinary teams. |
