This course introduces the fundamental methods used in the occupational therapy process, emphasizing the relationship among the person, occupation, environment, and occupational performance. It covers information gathering and occupational history, observation, activity and occupational analysis, and identification of factors, skills, and performance patterns influencing participation in everyday occupations. The course introduces principles of evaluation, problem and priority identification, person-centered goal setting, and selection and use of purposeful activities and occupations as both means and outcomes of intervention. Students are introduced to principles of activity grading, modification and adaptation, environmental modification, and the use of appropriate tools and resources to promote performance, independence, and participation. Emphasis is placed on developing therapeutic communication, foundational clinical reasoning, and relating occupational therapy methods to clients’ needs and occupational goals. |
