This course provides an introductory supervised fieldwork experience that enables students to apply foundational occupational therapy knowledge and skills in authentic practice settings. Students develop an understanding of the roles and responsibilities of occupational therapists and practice professional and therapeutic communication with clients, families, and members of the healthcare team, information gathering, systematic observation, activity and occupational performance analysis, and participation in the administration of appropriate assessment tools. Under supervision, students participate in identifying problems and priorities, establishing goals, and the initial planning and implementation of person-centered and occupation-based occupational therapy interventions. Emphasis is placed on developing introductory clinical reasoning, documentation, safety, privacy and confidentiality, ethical and professional conduct, teamwork within rehabilitation settings, and integration of theoretical knowledge with actual practice. |
