This course deals with the nature of science: its concept, objectives, structure, research fields, methodology, stages of development, and postulates. Then, it introduces basic concepts in biology and how to teach them, such as the characteristics of living organisms, their diversity, methods of reproduction, and levels of organization (starting with cells and their structure, tissues and their types, organs and systems, and ending with the body of the organism). It presents biological processes such as cellular transport, cell division, respiration, photosynthesis, and genetics. Then it ends with an overview of taxonomy. Students are trained on strategies for learning concepts such as induction and deduction, brainstorming, probing questions, conceptual change and directed inquiry. |
