Course Discription : This course deals with discourse analysis, that is, analyzing language as it is used and the relation between this use and the functions and purposes to which language is employed. This course aims at increasing students’ understanding and knowledge regarding the use of language for communication, and specifically how the language user forms and composes the linguistic message to send it to the addressee and how the addressee analyzes and interprets this message. The course also aims at familiarizing students with the mechanism of using discourse analysis to describe the activities incorporated in the intersection between other related fields like linguistics, sociology, psycholinguistics, and language philosophy. Within the different aspects of discourse analysis, this course tackles topics like textualism, cohesiveness, organicism, pragmatism, text and its relation to context, and other criteria like social convention, concession, and contextualism. The course also deals with the structure of dialogue and analyzing its connotations and linguistic acts.
