This course focuses on studying the relationships and affinities between language and society and describing the ways of using language in different social contexts. The course presents various topics that include language communities and the analysis of linguistic varieties that identify the age, gender, and social class of the speaker as well as analyzing the social function of language. In addition, the course examines the role of different social factors in a linguistic context and discusses some sociolinguistic phenomena like bilingualism, the relationship between gender and language, interacting languages, the connections established between cultures, the social use of language, and linguistic determinism.
The course consists of a group of lectures, presentations, and workshops, and students present two reports on specific topics with a specific focus.
