This course outlines the historical development of Arabic grammar, starting with the linguistic landscape of Arabia and the position of Arabic within Semitic language family. Several discussions will be guided by reading selected texts from different phases of Arabic, beginning with the pre-Islamic period and ending with the contemporary spoken dialects. We also examine Old Arabic consonants, vowels, diphthongs, and triphthongs and comparing them with the contemporary Arabic. Nominal and pronominal morphology, Verbal morphology, negation, and existential predication will also be considered in this course. The students are also expected to gain an understanding of the diversity of the modern dialects of Arabic. |
