This course focuses on the principles and parameters approach to syntax, which attempts to characterize the grammars of all natural languages in terms of a set of universal principles that all languages share, and a set of parameters along which languages may vary. This will be followed by a concise, clear and accessible introduction to current syntactic theories, drawing on the key concepts of the most recent version of the principles and parameters approach, namely Chomsky’s Minimalist program. |
