This course gives an introduction to Arabic literature during the Islamic and Umayyad eras through a number of topics as in Islam and poetry, poets who flourished in both the pre-Islamic and Islamic periods, poetry of the Islamic conquests and the Islamic sectarian poetry. Emphasis will be placed on the literary milieu of that time and the variations within it in regards to the subject matter and technique. The course ends with a look at the various genres of prose through epistles and oratory, where students will have to memorize no less than a 100 lines of verse. |
