This course sheds light on the pre-Islamic Arabic literature through a study of public life then, the social, economic and religious factors and their effect on the pre-Islamic poetry, prose, its sources, issues of impersonation, the extent to which pre-Islamic poetry depicts Arab life, characteristics of the subject matter and techniques of pre-Islamic poetry. The course concludes with an analysis of some poetic texts, of which students are required to memorize no less than a 100 lines of verse. |
