This course addresses occupational therapy assessment and intervention for individuals with hand and upper-extremity injuries and conditions, emphasizing their impact on occupational performance, independence, and participation in daily activities, work, and leisure. It covers common injuries involving bones, joints, tendons, ligaments, nerves, and soft tissues, as well as tissue healing and related precautions. The course addresses assessment of pain, edema, range of motion, strength, sensation, dexterity, and functional use of the hand, together with appropriate intervention principles to restore movement, strength, sensation, coordination, and manual skills. Topics include edema and scar management, joint and tissue protection, sensory and functional retraining, activity modification, adaptive equipment, and orthotic use when indicated. Emphasis is placed on integrating hand function into meaningful occupations, promoting independence and return to activities of daily living, work, and life roles, and applying clinical reasoning, evidence-informed practice, and outcome measurement. |
