This course provides an introductory supervised fieldwork experience that enables students to apply foundational occupational therapy knowledge and skills in authentic practice settings. Students develop an understanding of the roles and responsibilities of occupational therapists and practice professional communication with clients, families, and members of the healthcare team, information gathering, systematic observation, occupational performance analysis, and participation in the evaluation process. Under supervision, students participate in problem identification, goal setting, and the planning and implementation of basic person- and occupation-centered occupational therapy interventions. Emphasis is placed on developing therapeutic and professional communication, documentation, introductory clinical reasoning, safety, confidentiality, ethical conduct, and integration of theoretical knowledge with clinical practice. |
