This practical course provides hands-on application of the principles of orthotic and splint design, fabrication, and use in occupational therapy, with emphasis on hand and upper-extremity splinting. Students develop skills in measurement, pattern preparation, material selection, and the design, fabrication, molding, fitting, and modification of various static and dynamic splints according to different clinical and occupational needs. Practical activities include evaluating splint fit and effectiveness, monitoring skin integrity, pressure areas, and potential complications, making necessary adjustments, and educating clients regarding safe use and splint care. Emphasis is placed on developing technical skills, problem-solving, and clinical reasoning and on relating splint selection and design to therapeutic goals, occupational performance, independence, and participation in daily activities. |
