This course covers the theoretical and practical principles of orthotic and splint design, fabrication, and application in occupational therapy practice, with emphasis on hand and upper-extremity splinting. It addresses relevant anatomical and biomechanical principles, properties of splinting materials and tools, and principles of measurement, design, fabrication, fitting, and modification. The course examines static and dynamic splints and their applications in protecting tissues and joints, maintaining functional positioning, preventing or correcting deformities, and supporting movement and function. Students gain practical experience in selecting, fabricating, applying, and evaluating appropriate splints, monitoring skin integrity and potential complications, and educating clients regarding safe splint use and care to promote occupational performance, independence, and participation in daily activities. |
