This course provides an introduction to the occupational therapy profession, its philosophy, development, and theoretical foundations, with emphasis on the concepts of purposeful activity and occupation and their relationships to health, well-being, independence, participation, and quality of life. It introduces areas of occupation, performance patterns and skills, personal and environmental factors influencing occupational performance, and basic principles of activity and occupational analysis. Students are introduced to the occupational therapy process, including evaluation, goal setting, intervention, and outcome measurement, as well as person- and family-centered and evidence-informed practice. The course explores occupational therapy roles and practice settings across the lifespan, interdisciplinary collaboration, professional values and ethics, communication, and professional responsibilities. It establishes a foundation for understanding the identity and role of occupational therapy in enabling individuals, groups, and communities to participate in meaningful occupations. |
