This course explores the concept of sustainable development. The three pillars of sustainable development - economic development, environmental protection, and social development - will be introduced. Basic concepts of ecological economics cost-benefit valuation techniques will be presented and applied. The roles of local people, government, and private, national, and bilateral aid agencies will be examined as constraints against the implementation of sustainable development models. Sustainability issues related to the Middle East, such as aging of populations, sustainable consumption, institutional adjustments, and managing growth, will be emphasized. |
