Department of Physical and Occupational Therapy

About Department

THE OT PROGRAM AT THE HU IS CONSIDERED AS ONE OF THE FIRST PROGRAMS IN JORDAN THAT GRANTS STUDENTS WITH A BACHELOR DEGREE. IT WAS ESTABLISHED IN 1999.
THE OT PROFESSION IS STILL RELATIVELY NEW IN JORDAN AND EVEN IN THAT REGION OF THE WORLD. HOWEVER, OT IN JORDAN IS A GROWING PROFESSION AS HOSPITALS (OFFICIAL AND PRIVATE) AND MEDICAL CENTERS IN THE LAST FEW YEARS STARTED FOCUS MORE ON REHABILITATION. MOST MIDDLE EAST COUNTRIES DO NOT HAVE OT PROGRAMS, WHICH PLACED JORDAN AMONG THE LEADING COUNTRIES IN THIS FIELD IN THE REGION.
OUR GRADUATES ARE PREPARED TO PRACTICE AS REGISTERED OCCUPATIONAL THERAPISTS IN JORDAN AND WORLDWIDE. IN ADDITION TO OUR OUTSTANDING TEACHING STAFFS THAT ARE GRADUATES FROM HIGHLY RANKED OT SCHOOLS IN THE WORLD.
STUDENTS ACCEPTED IN THE OT PROGRAM AT THE HU COMPLETED THEIR HIGH SCHOOL. THERE IS NO DISCRIMINATION IN ACCEPTING STUDENTS IN THE PROGRAM ACCORDING TO THEIR ORIGIN, AGE, SEX, RACE, COLOR, OR RELIGION. ANY STUDENT WHO MEETS THE REQUIREMENT SET BY THE FACULTY OF ALLIED HEALTH SCIENCES AT THE HU CAN APPLY FOR THE PROGRAM.
OUR PROGRAM IS THE FIRST OT PROGRAM IN JORDAN THAT IS ACCREDITED BY THE WORLD FEDERATION OF OCCUPATIONAL THERAPISTS (WFOT) (THE KEY INTERNATIONAL REPRESENTATIVE FOR OCCUPATIONAL THERAPISTS AND OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY AROUND THE WORLD AND THE OFFICIAL INTERNATIONAL ORGANIZATION FOR THE PROMOTION OF OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY).

OUR PHILOSOPHY:

WE BELIEVE THAT HUMAN BEING IS A COMPLEX BIOLOGICAL, PSYCHOLOGICAL, SOCIAL, AND CULTURAL SYSTEM. PERSON PRACTICE HIS HUMANITY THROUGH OCCUPATIONAL PARTICIPATION. OCCUPATION IS ANY PURPOSEFUL ACTIVITY THE PERSON PERFORMS IN HIS DAILY LIFE THAT CAN BE CATEGORIZED UNDER PLAY, WORK, REST, AND/OR SELF-CARE. OCCUPATIONAL THERAPIST IS A PROFESSIONAL WHO USES OCCUPATIONAL PARTICIPATION WITH HIS CLIENTS AS A METHOD TO PREVENT AND TREAT DIFFERENT PHYSICAL, PSYCHOLOGICAL, SOCIAL, AND/OR DEVELOPMENTAL PROBLEMS AND TO PROMOTE HEALTH.
ANY CHANGES IN THE OCCUPATIONAL ENVIRONMENT OF THE HUMAN BEING WILL DEMAND HIM TO ADAPT ACCORDINGLY. THE INABILITY TO ADAPT EFFECTIVELY CAN AFFECT THE HUMAN BEING’S OCCUPATIONAL PERFORMANCE AND BY THE END AFFECT HIS HEALTH STATUS IN GENERAL. THE ROLE OF THE OCCUPATIONAL THERAPIST IS TO FACILITATE THE PROCESS OF ADAPTATION THAT THE CLIENT GOES THROUGH IN A COLLABORATIVE APPROACH WITH THE CLIENT TO PROMOTE MAXIMUM OCCUPATIONAL PERFORMANCE AND INDEPENDENCY.

OUR GOAL:

TO PROVIDE THE SOCIETY WITH PROFESSIONAL OCCUPATIONAL THERAPISTS WHO ARE ABLE TO USE OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY PROCESS TO PROVIDE OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY SERVICES TO DIFFERENT CLIENTS. THE OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY PROCESS IS A CLIENT-CENTERED APPROACH BY WHICH THE OCCUPATIONAL THERAPIST AND IN COLLABORATION WITH THE CLIENT GATHERS DATA, IDENTIFIES PROBLEM AREAS, DEVELOP AN INTERVENTION PLAN, IMPLEMENT THE PLAN, AND EVALUATE THE WHOLE PROCESS. GRADUATES OF THE PROGRAM SHOULD VALUE THE IMPORTANCE OF PURPOSEFUL OCCUPATIONS IN PREVENTING AND TREATING DISEASES, AND IN PROMOTING HEALTH AMONG INDIVIDUALS. GRADUATES SHOULD VALUE THE IMPORTANCE OF RESEARCH AND EDUCATION IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY PROFESSION.
WHAT IS OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY?
OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY IS A HEALTH PROFESSION THAT VALUES THE USE OF OCCUPATION AS A THERAPEUTIC METHOD TO PREVENT AND TREAT DIFFERENT PHYSICAL, PSYCHOLOGICAL, SOCIAL, AND/OR DEVELOPMENTAL PROBLEMS AND TO PROMOTE HEALTH.

ADMISSION:
STUDENTS APPLYING FOR THE OT PROGRAM AT THE HU (THE FACULTY OF ALLIED HEALTH SCIENCES) SHOULD FINISH THEIR HIGH SCHOOL “THE SCIENTIFIC STREAM”. THEIR GPA SHOULD BE 75% OR MORE TO APPLY. THE GPA OF THE STUDENT AND THE NUMBER OF AVAILABLE SEATS WILL DECIDE WHO WILL BE ACCEPTED.
CLINICAL TRAINING:
THE OT PROGRAM HAS AFFILIATION WITH MANY OT SITES. STUDENTS ARE SENT TO DIFFERENT OT SITES IN JORDAN AND EXPOSED TO THE NATURE OF SERVICES PROVIDED BY OCCUPATIONAL THERAPISTS. SUPERVISORS FROM EXPERTS’ OCCUPATIONAL THERAPISTS ARE SENT WITH STUDENTS IN THE FIELDWORK. STUDENTS ARE EXPOSED TO HANDS ON PRACTICE OPPORTUNITIES IN THREE DIFFERENT SEMESTERS. THE LAST SEMESTER OF THE PROGRAM IS AN EXTENSIVE FIELDWORK EXPERIENCE THROUGH WHICH STUDENTS ARE PRACTICING AS OCCUPATIONAL THERAPISTS UNDER SUPERVISION. THIS GIVES STUDENTS THE OPPORTUNITY TO PRACTICE WHAT THEY LEARNED IN THE PROGRAM AND PREPARES THEM TO FUNCTION AS OCCUPATIONAL THERAPISTS AFTER GRADUATION
