Department of Biology and Biotechnology


1) International Collaboration:

* Professor Khaled Abu-Elteen gives a talk through video conference to faculty members of the Faculty of Applied Sciences, University of Samarra, Iraq about challenges facing researchers in publication in indexed journals.


* Dr. Lubna Tahtamouni was awarded an Arab-American Frontiers Fellowship by the U.S. National Academy of Sciences. This fellowship will sponsor Dr. Tahtamouni to spend 4 weeks in the summer at the lab of Prof. Khalid Salaita of Emory University and Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta, Georgia The United States to conduct collaborative research.

2) Community service

A) School visits museum:

Students of elementary and high schools visit the department 4-6 times, at least, each semester. During these visits the departments’ lab technicians take the students in a tour through the teaching labs, herbarium, green house and animal house.

B) Research mentoring for high school students
The department is currently mentoring four female students attending the nearby “Imm Assaleeh” school, Al-Hashmeyeh, Mafraq, who have applied for a scientific competition. Their project includes studying the antimicrobial and antioxidative activities of certain plant species.

3) Maintenance of the department:
In a collaborative effort between the department’s employees students and employees of the Department of Engineering and Maintenance, the department is being maintained on a daily basis. This maintenance effort includes the following:
- Repair of lab equipments
- Labs and classrooms infrastructure
- Halls and Passageways (Corridors) renovations
- Labs re-assignments
