This course is concerned with the study of meaning as it is systematically encoded in the vocabulary and grammar of language. It deals in particular with the nature of meaning: naming, denotation, sense, reference; lexical meaning: grammatical relations, thematic meaning, propositional content of sentences; and utterance meaning: speech acts, illocutionary force, presenting unconventional ways of analyzing language which are completely different from how people usually communicate with language . |
