This course is mainly about the history of linguistics throughout ages starting from the Indians and Greeks, going to the Arabs in Europe from the sixteenth century till the end of the nineteenth century. It also studies the major linguistic schools and their founders like the Descriptive, Bragh, Copenhagen, American, and transformational schools. Other issues to be discussed in this course include the relationship between language on the one hand, and society, self, thought, culture, gender, and media, on the other. |
